Vermonters vs. Al-Jazeera; Beatty vs. Kerry

How silly. A bunch of people calling themselves Defenders of Vermont launched a petition drive to force the Burlington, Vt., municipal cable-TV system to cease running English-language broadcasts of Al-Jazeera, the Qatar-based news network. The group, which called Al-Jazeera anti-American (it sometimes is, but also provides very useful information around the world), failed to make the deadline for ballot items.

How about a referendum item to eliminate the First Amendment? Wait a minute! That would probably win.

Deigning to debate
Sen. (for life?) John Kerry is descending from his throne to participate in two debates with Republican challenger Jeff Beatty. The first, hour-long debate is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. on New England Cable News, the second for Oct. 27 on WTKK radio.

Mr. Beatty, a scrappy Cape Cod businessman and former Army Delta Force officer, has criticized Mr. Kerry for accepting campaign donations from financial institutions in the Wall Street meltdown. But that Capitol Hill club is a very crowded one indeed.

Mr. Beatty might do better to ask the elusive Mr. Kerry what he has done for Massachusetts. Mr. Kerry might ask the Cape Codder what he thinks about the Bush tax cuts (which have greatly benefitted Mr. Kerry).

Debate, de-shmate. If there were ever a perfect time for a duel at 10 paces, choose your weapon, no seconds required, this is it. One's a chip off the old Kennedy Compound, the other's Ollie North without the wit.
