For some reason, Timothy Geithner reminded me of this picture by English artist Aubrey Beardsley, an outre star of the decadent 1890s.
Perhaps the stock markets tanked after Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's Tuesday discussion of the financial bailout redux because he looked and sounded like an undergraduate -- still the sort of permanent professional protege of Big Feet like the always self-enriching Robert Rubin and the uber-arrogant (confident?) Lawrence Summers. Maybe Wall Street just wanted more gravitas.
Even if the gravitas covers up grave error or sleaze.
Maybe you know someone who knows someone at Dartmouth who could add a new course:
Public speaking For Future Treasury Secretaries
Hank Paulson's public appearances made me nervous. Because he looked so nervous. Inspiring confidence requires that one at least fake having confidence. And meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Geithner, another Dartmouth alum, is, indeed, a poor presenter. He gives me the impression that he's in way over his head.
Or maybe taking a Dale Carnegie course should be on Geithner's long to do list
