March Snow

By Charles J. Read

Somehow we wanted to believe

celestial heavens, just for Lent,

would give up dropping snow.

albany.jpgBut no.

It may have been the ashes,

that pile we left from Wednesday

that prompted snow to fall

For I recall

Nature cares much for neatness

not ashes gray and gloomy, so

why not cover them with white.

That's right

The heavens only played with patience

as we tired of galoshes, sweaters

yearning for jonquils, tints of yellow,

Spring mellow

For March First snow is but a kiss,

tender with hints of passion ...

our winter friend, its wink goodbye.

Oh, my!

Nice job, Charlie. And so, so right on. The calendar shouts, " Spring is comin' in! " The north wind whispers, " Not yet."

Well done, cousin! As the snow piles grow taller beside my Alton driveway but the forsythia has buds, I do believe Mother Nature and Old Man Winter are reading different pages - - - if not different books.
