The U.S. Coast Guard will put a tidal-power generator in the water later this year to provide electricity to its station in Eastport, Maine, reports the AP. What a fine example!

The agency sees the potential of Eastport's 20-foot tides and 6-knot currents.

Capt. Jim McPherson, commander of the Coast Guard's northern New England sector, told the AP that this might be the Coast Guard's first use of tidal power, and indeed be first federal government facility anywhere to use tidal power.

The Guard already uses wind and solar power at some of its facilities. But eastern Maine, with its huge tides, is a perfect place for tidal power.

The 10th annual New England Regional Genealogical Consortium is meeting in Manchester, N.H.

The historical weight of New England, the aging of the population and the natural tendency of older people to review their families should make geneaology a bigger industry in the next few years.

The New Hampshire Union Leader reports that the conference iwill include the uses of the Internet and DNA testing! Some may find they'd be a lot happier without this information. Too many embarrassing surprises, and maybe even some juicy paternity suits and contestings of wills.
