Island in the Mist, by John Borchard

This picture, taken on the Charles River, is part of the Massachusetts photographer's current show at the Krause Gallery, at Moses Brown School, in Providence, until May 1. The show, among other things, explores the different emotional and aesthetic effects of clouds and mist. There's some exquisite stuff, from New England and elsewhere. His work, including the pictures of scenes you've been by many times, takes you away to new realms.

As more newspaper journalists get laid off, look for a proliferation of new publications as they seek to keep busy. And they realize that reading is different on paper than reading on screen and so haven't utterly given up on the dead-tree model.

For instance, there's Stimulus Times.com, a newsletter put out by laid-off Providence Journal employees to initially serve the East Side of that city. It includes some sad, mordant and even cheery observations on our current economic fix. Perhaps more importantly, it also includes some ads!
