The New Hampshire legislature has approved banning text messaging and typing on laptops while driving. It's unclear if Gov. John Lynch will sign the legislation. This is a tough decision in the "Live Free or Die'' state, but these electronic-device addicts can be lethal to others on highways. This would be a tough law to enforce, but something's gotta give. I suppose if the cops can stop somebody from swigging from what is clearly a beer bottle in a car, they can try to stop this electronic-device madness, which is about as dangerous. The cell phoning and texting is out of control. And don't people think of how they're scrambling their brains with this high-speed multi-tasking (which ensures they do nothing well)? Maybe they could turn everything off for a change, and THINK? A New York City cop once berated me for talking on a cell phone (about a child's medical problem) while driving. She was right. But at least I was driving on a straight, cross-town street. Texters and cell phoners seem to particularly favor using electronic devices while turning in heavy but high-speed traffic. XXX The Cape Cod Times reports that 20 percent of those with second homes on Cape Cod plan to live on the peninsula full time within 15 years, presumably as retirees. (The median age of those polled was 60.) It means that local schools will particularly suffer, as these oldsters, with none of their kids in school, vote against higher taxes for public schools. Hi! I may understand the necessity of using a cellphone while driving, on occasion,---though not texting. But I fail to understand why many people seem to have their cellphones permanently attached to their ears! Nor can I understand when they are talking about with such urgency that they couldn't wait until they were home, or at least not driving. How did people survive before the cellphone without constant communication? Not long ago I saw a person driving (gender not specified) with CP, a cigarette and a coffee. I hope this person was an alien and had a few more hands to handle driving. I would think, after a while, that people might prefer NOT to be in continual touch with others via cellphone. It might be nice to sit and have a coffee or a brew and just be with your own thoughts. I might get up my courage to ask people what they are actually talking about when they do so continuously. Do a blog follow-up about what people talk about on cellphones. TRC
