Local 799 goes national!

I give my friends in Local 799 of the International Association of Firefighters a lot of credit -- they really know how to bring national pressure to bear on their very local dispute with Providence Mayor David Cicilline.

Even with Vice President Biden and other members of the Cabinet meekly bailing out of the National Conference of Mayors meeting here this weekend so as not to offend the union, there are bound to be some national cameras on the picket lines. After all, some mayors arenational figures, sort of.

The question is whether that national attention will help the firefighters or, rather, lead to more stories about Providence in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal that the firefighters would rather not have. If, that is, such media have any effect around here.

The Providence Fire Department has some very, very good rescue personnel. They have helped my own family. Wonderful people.

But they now may need some PR rescue themselves. Perhaps one of their own, Warwick's Michael Morse, author of Rescuing Providence, will have some ideas.

Providence Firefighters have been helpful to me in the past, too. That is what we pay them for -- to do their jobs. We do not, however, pay them to imperil ourselves.

My crystal ball says their picketing will only serve to hurt their abusive cause. Good.

The local and national mood is one of no longer having the do-re-mi to bend over and assume the position for those fairly compensated for what they do and who have far better health benefits than most.

Biden et al are weenies for acceding to the wishes of the firefighters, and it will reflect badly upon them.

Perhaps this episode will continue to cast more light on the shocking inequities of our abysmal "health care" system in the U.S., and move us more quickly to a single-payer system.

Oui shell sea.

Nobody questions the value of what the firefighters do, but and it's a big but, they have to learn that this is the 21st Century and we must all pay our fair share..

I have never seen a photo of a fire fighter recruit being brought to the training sessions in handcuffs. It's voluntary, they know what they are up against and how they will be compensated, and that it might change year by year. They work for the City, not the Union.

If it's all about money, next time get a job on Wall Street as Hedge Fund manager.

Sympathy will only get you so far. Grow up.
