West Falmouth Harbor soon before the recent storm.
Cape Cod (and the Vineyard and Nantucket), with its mild, oceanic climate and its many oak, pine and cedar trees, stays green a lot longer than the rest of New England. And its mildness attracts retirees from the Boston suburbs who want less snow. But they often complain about the winter wind produced by offshore storms heading for the Maritimes after they've lived on the peninsula for a while.
Drier, less windy Vermont in January can sometimes seem warmer than Cape Cod in the same month.
West Falmouth, like several towns on the Cape, saw its first major European intrusion with the arrival of Quakers fleeing the hidebound Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies.
The Quakers, like Rodney King, asked: "Why can't we all just get along?''
