Weather vs climate; border bathos

Some environmental groups have released a report saying that Acadia National Park is deeply threatened by climate change, with rising sea levels and worsening storms. Maybe, in the long run, there's something to it (unless manmade warning is simply offsetting cylical cooling).
As an example they cite the high waves from Hurricane Bill on the Maine coast this summer. But high waves from hurricanes are nothing new on the Maine Coast, as anyone who remembers Hurricane Edna, in 1954, will attest. Much, much worse than Bill's! (And for a chuckle, read E.B. White's report of the hurricane called "In the Eye of Edna.'')
The alarmists are confusing short-term weather with climate.

Too bad that the cozy ties between the people of Derby Line, Vt., and Stanstead, Quebec, have to be disrupted by a post 9/11 erection of gates on two streets. Now they are real border towns, as you see in much of the world. "The world's longest unfortified border'' -- between Canada and the U.S. -- now has more intrigue and anxiety.
Criminal people- and drug-smuggling organizations have long been bringing people and stuff through the area, mostly to get to the U.S. That used to be tolerated a bit to support regional friendliness, but no longer in the Age of Terror.
